Album Review - ABBA "Voyage"

edited November 2021 in General

I must admit that since childhood in the 70s, I've been somewhat of a fan of ABBA, thanks in no small part to my parents' influence. I love the combination of instantly likeable creativity, quality production and tunes that make you want to get up and dance!

So, with much curiosity, I fired up Spotify and hit play on their first new album offering in a very long time. Would this album measure up to my hopes and expectations?

All the elements seem to be there. The orchestral arrangements are typical ABBA, the melodies and harmonies are rich and plentiful and the sound quality is what I'd expect from a group with the pedigree and experience of ABBA.

However, I can't help but feeling that something significant is missing. Admittedly, I haven't given this album a lot of time yet but my first impressions are that it is all a bit cliché. It seems to lack that deep, infectious soul that their classic albums ooze. It doesn't take me on a journey and it doesn't really make me want to dance.

Who knows, perhaps in time it will grow on me as some albums do. The question is, am I willing to give it that time to grow?

Now please excuse me whilst I clean my ears with Dark Side of the Moon...... 🙃 ;)
